3rd day in Venice - Murano

Today we decided to go to Murano, an island across the lagoon from Venice that is known for its glasswork.

We walked across the Cannaregio area to the far side of Venice, and caught a water-bus to Murano. On the way there was an interesting statue in the water, and people were kayaking in the Lagoon.

We got off at the Colonna stop on Murano, and walked along a canal with glass shops and retaurants all displaying very creative glass work.

We then visited the Glass Museum, which has displays of glass work from different times, particularly in Murano. The making of glass is over 3000 years old, but was firmly established by the Romans. Over the centuries there were innovations such as making the glass clear, and different techniques such as using filiments for texture.

After the museum we found a glass factory that offered glass-making demonstrations.

Next we had lunch, and took the water-bus back to Venice.

While walking along the main strip, we found a grocery store that was a converted old theatre!

We had dinner at a restaurant along one of main canals near the station, for our last night in Venice.
